The Do’s and Don’ts of running – a Beginner’s Guide.
If you’re anything like us, the London Marathon might have inspired you to start pounding the pavements, but we want to make sure you avoid some of the common mistakes newbie runners fall into…
DO get the right gear …even if you’ve got no idea!
Running can be a very inexpensive sport, but the one thing you must invest in is the right footwear. Your trainers don’t need to be the most expensive or the newest model, but they do need to be suited to your running style.
DON’T set off without warming up
Warming up prepares your muscles for exercise and will help prevent injury.
DO start slow
It’s natural to start a run giving it your all, but your body requires time to warm up, so start at a comfortable pace where you can easily hold a conversation for the first 8-10 minutes. That way you won’t burn yourself out.
DON’T eat a big meal before running
Fatty, spicy or high-fibre meals are not recommended before a run so step away from that bhuna with side of chips! High carb snacks, such as a banana or overnight oats, are what will offer your body the right kind of fuel before a run, just remember to leave a little time for digestion.
DO try and find a running buddy
They do wonders for your motivation and it’s always safer to run with someone.
DON’T do too much too soon
Running is all about building your stamina. If you’ve never run before, or had a break, you’re only increasing your chance of injury by running too much in a short amount of time.
DO enjoy it!
There’s no denying running is a great way to keep fit. It’s proven to have benefits to both physical and mental health, whilst also being a great way to meet people through running groups and park runs.
Remember, running doesn’t have to be hard. As long as you have a comfortable pair of trainers and the motivation to move a little (or a lot!) at your own pace you can’t fail.
