Retro Revival – Dress the Decades
It’s the trend that just won’t quit, and with good reason! Throwback threads are always a winner – whether you remember them from the first time round or this is your first time in flares – retro fashion works no matter your age, size, or shape.
Here at Lookagain.co.uk we’re so obsessed with all things nostalgic that we simply couldn’t pick just one decade to take our style inspo from – we picked five! With this handy guide take a trip back in time through the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s (I know what you’re thinking but they happened 20 years ago, people!), as we show you how to dress the decades…
Flirty Fifties
The fifties was the decade for feminine glamour. Achieving this look is all about nipped-in waists, cute colours and oh-so-girly finishing touches. Get a wiggle to rival Marilyn’s in this Lux Off Shoulder Dress by The Pretty Dress Company and get the perfect kitsch kick out of these adorable accessories from Joe Browns.
Swinging Sixties
Free-spirits reigned supreme as the Sixities took hold, bringing with them a kaleidoscope of colours, patterns and a radical new attitude towards dressing. The swing mini dress, like this one from AX Paris, is an icon of the decade. Other key pieces include roll-neck jumpers (layer them under shift dresses), statement psychedelic accessories and of course a beehive hair-do – keep it in place with our Final Fix Hairspray from GHD.
Sassy Seventies
One of the most popular retro trends of the past few seasons, the Seventies aren’t going anywhere! To replicate the decade of groove, disco and boho babes galore, focus on these funky pieces. Flares are a 70’s girl’s best friend (as is a bit of double denim!), and you can’t go wrong with a bright kaftan, a pair of killer platforms and a whole load of fringing either.
Electrifying Eighties
Now, I know what you’re thinking BUT the eighties weren’t all awful perms and oversized shoulder pads! This Tailored Blazer by Laura Scott is modern and stylish but still screams Miami Vice chic. Ramp up the 80s ‘more is more’ vibes with these metallic court shoes and statement earrings or keep it casual with an 80s staple – a bright, oversized jumper.
Nicely Nineties
Only in the past couple of years has this decade been considered long enough ago to count as retro, and since then the trend has exploded! Party like its 1999 in this denim jacket from Hilfiger Denim (an iconic 90s brand!) and accessorise with grungy touches like Converse, backpacks and anything in the quintessential 90s fabric – tartan!
